Historical Appreciation:Benniseeds, as sesame seeds are called in the Bantu dialect of Africa, are thought to bring good luck. Perhaps luck, along with their health benefits, have made sesame seeds such a popular commodity in so many cultures. These seeds were thought to have first originated in India and were mentioned in early Hindu legends. In these legends, tales are told in which sesame seeds represent a symbol of immortality. From India, sesame seeds were introduced throughout the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The ancient Egyptians used the oil for ritual purification. The Middle Easterners dedicated themselves to crafting sesame paste, a.k.a. Tahini, and the Africans delighted in adding the seeds to a variety of recipes. Today, Vivapura's truly hand-crafted traditional Tahini is a staple for any contemporary healthy kitchen.
Health Benefits*:Not only are sesame seeds an excellent source of manganese and copper, but they are also a good source of calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, vitamin B1, zinc and dietary fiber. In addition to these important nutrients, sesame seeds contain two unique substances:
sesamin and
sesamolin. Both of these substances belong to a group of special beneficial fibers called lignans, and have been shown to have a cholesterol-lowering effect in humans, and to prevent high blood pressure and increase vitamin E supplies in animals. Sesamin has also been found to protect the liver from oxidative damage. Sesame is also 25% protein and rich in methionine and tryptophan. Low-temperature stone-grinding the sesame seeds into Tahini makes it more easily digestible, while preserving the vital nutrients.
